Layout for a book of contemporary large-scale urban architecture.

This book presents 44 innovative large-scale projects of urban architecture. All of the projects are quite new, none had been built at the time the book was created and quite a few are visionary projects that will not be implemented. For this book I have created and implemented the layouts. The selection of projects and editing of the content was done by the publisher.
The book includes projects from some well-known architects like Daniel Liebeskind, Zaha Hadid, NOX, MVRDV and Emergent. The strong visual character of the book has dictated a layout that would promote the esthetics of the projects without overshadowing them. The book is 22 x 22 cm and has 300 pages.

Links Books have published over the last few years three books about street furniture presenting the latest designs on the market. For this book (the third) I have design and implemented the layout. The book presents more than 200 objects selected among the best commercially available designs.

Overall it is a simple and clear layout designed to include a big amount of images and information on each page considering from the beginning that image quality and size will vary greatly among the various products. The book is 242 x 284 mm and it has 240 pages. The material is organized thematically and there are indexes of designers and producers.

This book presents an overview of the public spaces, squares, plazas and parks of Barcelona. Barcelona is a city with a long history of urban design starting from the ear of Gaudi and continuing to the various Olympic projects, the works for the Forum and many others. The book presents an overview of all these spaces organized by neighborhoods.

The material for the book was collected by the publisher. My role was to organize the material in chapters, select the final images and develop drafts for the layouts with proximate positioning and size of images and texts. The final design of the layout and its implementation in the entire book was done by Christina Giakoumelou of melgrafik.

Editing and design of a book about new and innovative construction materials.

This book presents a wide selection of new and innovative construction materials. I have worked both as editor and designer doing the initial research, contacting the various firms organizing the materials in chapters and doing the final layout.

The materials and components presented have been selected for their technical or visual innovative characteristics. Most of them are materials available on the marketplace but there are also a few things that are still in development and will not reach the market for a few years. The book does not offer an academic or highly technical treatment of the subject; instead it is addressed at the average designer as an information source about the latest tendencies in construction materials.

The book has 240 pages and is 242 x 284 mm. Each material is presented on a single or double page with explanatory text, images and contact details of the firm.

Shop signs from the streets of the old center of Athens.

Ever since I came back to Athens a few months ago I have been fascinated with vernacular typography. The part of the old city at the center of Athens has not been dominated yet by advertisements and corporate signs. Most of the shops are old and small-scale and their signs show it. There are also lots of graffiti and other forms of typography not created by designers.
Not all of it is beautiful. There are some fine examples of craftsmanship but a lot of the stuff is just plain or even ugly. However, shop signs, graffiti and other forms of vernacular typography are the number one element in defining the graphic style of the city’s old center.
I have started documenting all this with the shop signs. The first part is already online on flickr and more will follow. When one looks closely behind the blandness of the signs there are many interesting details to be found. A lot of the hand-made typography is really interesting and some of it could become the basis for a design of display type. The newer signs, which are usually created from ready-made letters, are more interesting for their combinations of type that can go pretty wild and occasionally for their layouts. But the defining characteristic of almost all is their state of disrepair. Most of them are dirty and many are broken and half-covered with graffiti. In some cases new signs have been spray-painted on top of the traces of older ones, while other signs have wore-off to the point of being unreadable. The end-result has a very particular texture that can not be ignored hen doing graphic design for the area.

Editing and design of a book about the latest developments in the field of architecture as it has been reshaped by the use of digital technologies.

The book presents the latest developments in the field of architecture as it has been reshaped by the use of digital technologies. Focused in the work of young architects, it presents more than 60 projects and some small essays. For this book I have worked both as editor and designer starting from the initial idea and working on it almost until it was sent for print.

The projects selected are mostly small-scale projects done by young architects since the focus of the book was on presenting new and innovative ideas of using technologies that are already available and do not require huge budgets. The material of the book is organized in four chapters (fabrication, scripting, interaction and poetics). There is a small essay for each chapter, a general introduction and an essay by Supermanoeuvre. The book is relatively text-heavy since most of the projects required extensive technical descriptions.

The book has a square, 22 x 22 cm, format and almost 400 pages. The layout is simple and adaptable to the great variety of available material. The overall feel is a bit rougher than the previous books following the experimental and self-built character of the projects.

Layout for a book that presents architectural and artistic projects exploring the idea of minimum dwelling space. The projects include some practical and some conceptional proposals.

This book presents architectural and artistic projects exploring the idea of minimum dwelling space. The projects include some practical and some conceptional proposals. Most of the research for the book was done by the publisher. My part was to make the final selection of the more than 60 projects that were included and develop the layout. Most of the projects are given 4 pages with the first page containing the main text.
The format of the book is square (22 x 22 cm) and it has 300 pages. The layout is based on a 12 x 12 grid that gives a great flexibility for different image sizes. The book was published simultaneously in three languages.
